Playing as Princess Zelda in Hyrule WarriorsĪs I have previously written about, many video game series have established a solid identity with their music and soundtracks. This offers a very different experience to Smash Bros and allows fans of the series to view the franchise in a different, perhaps more serious light that isn’t provided by the slightly mad context of Smash Bros. Having Princess Zelda fight Ganondorf within a Smash Bros game doesn’t quite scratch the itch that Hyrule Warriors can now provide. Whilst Smash Bros games have allowed players to control all manner of Zelda characters who have been previously unplayable in the past, such as Princess Zelda herself, Hyrule Warriors allows players to fight as secondary Zelda characters within a Zelda specific context. It allows the player to control all manner of characters from the Legend of Zelda series’ past and even takes players back to events from previous games. This game is a non-cannon hack-and-slash adventure based on the Dynasty Warriors engine with a Legend of Zelda theme. Hyrule Warriors, however, focuses on one franchise. Smash Bros games are chock full of Nintendo history, containing hundreds of references to its past in trophy collectibles and even in its soundtrack. Just look for some reaction videos for the latest Smash Bros games and you will see how much these games mean to Nintendo fans. Each time a Smash Bros game is announced, fans constantly speculate which characters, items and stages will be included in the latest game and the manner in which Nintendo unveils the details of each new game slowly over months and months denotes how focused this game is on pleasing fans.
The Super Smash Bros games throw all manner of beloved Nintendo characters into a straight up brawler, pitting them against each other in iconic Nintendo locations, allowing Nintendo fans to see different franchises come together into one big experience.This 3DS iteration will be the fourth in the series, a series which is well known for its ability to sell consoles. At first glance this trend of recalling the past to create new games can be simply lambasted as lazy, but I personally see merit in these efforts and personally enjoy fan service in video games.įan service is defined as content that is created with the primary aim of pleasing a fan base without affecting the series’ cannon and these three games fit that description. As these aforementioned games demonstrate, entire experiences can be created that tap into the past for content rather than focusing on something entirely new and video game designers recognised this as an avenue of exploration over a decade ago. Now that many franchises have existed for over twenty years, fans of these series have a whole host of content to look back nostalgically upon. Whilst Super Smash Bros (3DS) has now become a franchise in its own right, the series is based on the entirety of Nintendo’s history. Indeed, in the case of Hyrule Warriors, it was not even made by Nintendo who owns The Legend of Zelda’s intellectual property. Hyrule Warriors (Wii U) and Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call (3DS) are both based on existing franchises, The Legend of Zelda and Final Fantasy respectively, but are spin-offs rather than part of that franchises’ main series. Within the space of a few weeks, Nintendo has released three games for its two current generation consoles that pander to fan service.
